DJP Update 5-17-2006 - Meetings of interest where our paths may cross (and did cross for some at Item 1) and Lagniappe

1- I just returned from the National Patient Safety Foundation Annual Safety Congress.  It was held in San Francisco.
Over 1200 people attended.  It was a wonderful conference.  I strongly recommend you or someone from your group or hospital attend
the 2007 meeting.  It will be held in Washington, DC May 2-4.  Monitor the NPSF web site for more details.  Details about the 2007
meeting will be added and check out how to get videos and CDs from the 2006 meeting from the web site.
The AMA is one of the proud parents of this safety organization.

(Full disclosure: I was a member of the NPSF Board of Directors since the beginning of operation in 1997 and have now moved to the newly
formed Board of Governors.)

2- On Saturday, I speak in Destin, Florida to the Alabama Chapter of the American College of Surgeons.  My topic is medical liability.  I
hope to see some on the DJP Update megalist there.

5- The week of June 5th I will be in Rapid City, South Dakota.  I speak to the South Dakota State Medical Association on June 8 on the
delivery of medical care in the wake of disaster..  As many of you know, I was chief of surgery at the 821st Med Group (SAC) Ellsworth
AFB from Sept 1968-Sept 1970.  Our medical colleagues are arranging a tour of Ellsworth AFB for me.  This is my first visit to the base
since 1970 and I am excited about it.  I learned to fly at the aero club at Ellsworth.  Lots of great memories of this tour of duty.

6- And then on to the Annual Meeting of AMA in Chicago.  Looking forward to seeing everyone there.

Lagniappe:
Check out this timeline of the flooding of New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina.  An impressive documentation of a sad story.  Copy and paste
link below into your Internet browser.

Final comment:  One day I will give a speech entitled "How I learned to love life in a trailer".  Hope to be back in our home May 30!
Robin and I decided to keep the 22 ft trailer we bought.  We found a storage home for it on high ground in St. Rose, Louisiana.  Our next
adventure might be a lecture tour across the beautiful USA with our Ford F-250 towing "Smokey" (name of our trailer made in Smokey
Mountains).

Stay well and travel with care,

Donald
