DJP Update 3-25-2007 - WWL Radio Show Talk Gumbo-"Spud" McConnell
tomorrow; Lagniappe

Tomorrow, Monday, 3-26-2007, at 11:00AM-Noon Central Daylight Time, I will be a guest on New Orleans WWL Radio on the "Talk Gumbo" show hosted by John "Spud" McConnell.  This is a 50,000 watt station.  I remember being able to receive it as I drove back to my US Air Force Base, Ellsworth AFB near Rapid City, South Dakota 1968-70.

Although the show is on AM and FM, this portion of the show will be on FM at 105.3.  One may be able to access it from the WWW of the Internet.  Info about John "Spud" McConnell and WWL is below.  The topic is physician participation in legally authorized executions.

I will be on the show as an individual and not representing any entity.  However, I will have the opportunity to let the public know of the treasure trove of ethical opinion information available on the AMA website in the PolicyFinder.  The Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs (CEJA) puts all of the opinions in PolicyFinder and that is located at:  http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/noindex/category/11760.html

CEJA Opinion "E-2.06 Capital punishment" can be found there.

JOHN “SPUD” MCCONNELL hosts WWL’s “Talk Gumbo” weekdays from 10am to 1pm (10am on WWL-AM-FM & WWL.com).  Spud was born and raised in Bayou country and is loved for his down home approach to talk. John holds a Master’s degree in acting. His career has taken him to Hollywood for three seasons on ABC’s Roseanne Show and to a successful run Off-Broadway in the one-man show, The Kingfish.  A favorite in Southern-based film and stage productions, John is also a “living landmark.”   Spud was honored with a life-sized bronze statue on New Orleans’ historic Canal Street commemorating his portrayal of Ignatius J. Reilly from the stage adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize winning novel,  A Confederacy of Dunces.

But it’s on his weekday talk show on The Big 870 WWL-Am and 105.3 FM that John “Spud” McConnell really shines. Listeners love his down home approach to talk and tough issues New Orleans faces in the recovery.  They say talking to Spud is like talking to family.  John is the number one Arbitron rated talk host in his time slot and was recently honored by Gambit Weekly and New Orleans magazine as one of the best talk hosts and shows in New Orleans.

John is married to Maureen McConnell (also an actress) and together they have 3 young children, who have also appeared on stage and screen with their parents.

Excerpt:

*WWL Coverage: WWL’s superior AM coverage speaks to not just the current citizens of the New Orleans Metro but to both displaced citizens and returning residents.  With a 50,000 watt “clear signal” frequency:  DAYtime WWL spans five states—from the Texas Gulf Cost to Florida; NIGHTtime WWL covers the entire Central U.S.—reaching 30-plus states and portions of Canada.  In addition, WWL's signal is heard in the far corners of the globe. Reception reports are received on a regular basis from as far away as Europe, Japan and Asia.  WWL’s FM coverage provides superior building penetration to enhance in-office listening.  With the AM-FM combo there are no listening barriers anywhere you go in the entire region.
WWL is an Entercom Communications Station affiliated with the CBS radio Network, and is also the Flagship station of the New Orleans Saints Radio Network.

*EMS: WWL is the Emergency Management Station for the Gulf South Region. The federal government’s official name for WWL is P.E.P, Primary Entry Point or LP1 (Local Primary#1). This officially means that in times of crisis, all other TV and radio stations in the region MUST MONITOR WWL as mandated by the federal government. Truly, WWL is the “Voice of the Gulf South” and that voice will now be heard everyday on 870am, 105.3fm, WWL.com and WWLOnDemand @ 1350am.
