DJP Update 3-14-2007 Alert: Tulane University search
for SVP/Dean Tulane School of Medicine
As some of you on my DJP Update megalist already know, I am on the Board of
Governors of the Tulane University Health Sciences Center. The Board had a
meeting yesterday and I was given permission to distribute this information
to my megalist. See notice below with contact person listed.
This SVP/Dean position is a wonderful opportunity for the right person to
lead the continuing rebirth of Tulane Medical School post-Hurricane Katrina.
Plus the new SVP/Dean will have the opportunity to try out all of
my favorite New Orleans restaurants that I feature in my restaurant list at
Intrepid Resources! Seriously, this is a once in a lifetime
opportunity to add to the fabulous history of a medical school in America's
most unique city.
With all of the state medical associations, over 100 specialty societies,
the representatives in the AMA House of Delegates, and others on this
megalist email distribution, there is the potential for you to further
distribute this to almost all of the physicians in America. Thank you for
your help. I look forward to meeting the man or woman, a rising superstar
or proven performer, who gets this position.
Stay well.

NOTICE:
Senior Vice President And Dean, School of Medicine Tulane University, an AAU
comprehensive research university, long
known for its commitment to academic excellence, invites
inquiries, nominations, and applications for the position of Senior
Vice President and Dean of the Tulane School of Medicine (SVP/DSOM). The SVP/DSOM
will report to the President, and be a member of the President’s Cabinet.
He/she will serve as the primary university spokesperson for all medical
related university issues, and will oversee and coordinate the full range of
the university’s medical partnerships and affiliation agreements.
The ideal candidate should have substantial experience as a faculty member
or leader in a distinguished academic or comparable medical setting; a
significant track record of success in funded medical research; an in depth
understanding of the clinical practice of academic medicine; budgetary
experience; the ability to represent the university effectively with
external constituents; and a compelling vision for increasing the
university’s record of NIH funding, and physician productivity in the
university’s clinical practices.
The SVP/DSOM position brings with it unparalleled opportunities
for leadership, innovation and initiative. Tulane is committed to
both focusing resources on programs of existing strength, and to
expanding their stature in new and emerging areas of research and
clinical expertise. The School of Medicine intends to fund their
strategic growth initiatives through a blend of development, clinical
income, and increased direct cost recovery. The new SVP/DSOM will
spearhead efforts to maintain extant areas of excellence while evaluating
and implementing opportunities for emerging areas of research and clinical
excellence.
The ideal candidate should be facile in the ability to recruit outstanding
new faculty in basic and translational research, and be persuasive in
his/her ability to retain Tulane’s strongest faculty, while leading the plan
to restructure, relocate, and rebuild Tulane’s training and clinical sites.
Overall, the School of Medicine seeks to position itself to capture a
sizable share of the clinical market in a newly resettled, greater New
Orleans; to leverage its prestige and expertise to form productive
partnerships with other clinical providers in the Gulf South region; and
ensure that the School of Medicine faculty successfully compete for
extramural funding such that they maintain and exceed their previous ranking
as among the top medical schools in the nation.
Persons amenable to being considered by the Search Advisory Committee for
this exciting leadership opportunity should submit, in electronic form
(Microsoft Word preferred) a curriculum vitae/resume and any supporting
materials. All materials will be held in strict confidence. Materials should
