The Greater New Orleans area remains in dire condition
post-Hurricane Katrina. What gives me some hope now is my friend Ron
Faucheux, JD, PhD, has joined the staff of Senator Mary Landrieu as Chief
of Staff . He is a wise political analyst and a person who can get
things done. I have followed his career since I joined his campaign to
help him get elected to the Louisiana legislature in the 70's. See
the press release below. His name should not be unfamiliar to you as I
introduced him to you on two occasions in 2004.
His photo and bio are located at:

Excepts from my comments in 2004 are below just before the press release.
Stay well and the very best to you in the New Year!

P.S. One day I will send you a note on how Robin and I learned to love
"Smokey the Trailer" where we currently reside.

I moderated a program later today on Health Policy and Medical Liability
Reform at Tulane 170th celebration. Ron Faucheux and Philip Howard were
the featured speakers and were terrific. Also Surgeon General Dr. Carmona
accepted invitation to speak tonight and
he did his usual fine job.

Excerpt two
(At the opening of the 2004 AMA Presidents' Forum in Washington DC
on March 24), I said:
Our keynote speaker this morning is Ron Faucheux, Ph.D., J.D., a long-time
friend and inspiration, who will fill us in on how things really
work on Capitol Hill, and how we can create strategies that will
help advance our societies’ agendas.

PRESS RELEASE December 2005
Louisiana Senator Landrieu Names Faucheux New Chief Of Staff
In a press release from the office of U.S. Senator, Mary Landrieu
of Louisiana, the Senator has named Ron Faucheux as her Chief-of-Staff
replacing Norma Jane Sabiston who recently announced her resignation from
that position. Here is the press release:
WASHINGTON – Former Louisiana state legislator and Secretary of Commerce
Ron Faucheux has been named Chief of Staff for United States Senator Mary
L. Landrieu, D-La., she today announced. The former publisher and editor
of Campaigns & Elections magazine, Faucheux is expected to assume his new
duties in early 2006.
“Ron Faucheux has been a trusted confidante and close friend for a great
many years,” Sen. Landrieu said. “I was proud to serve with
him in the Louisiana legislature and I am very happy that we will
be working together once again as he joins our Louisiana team in the
Senate. As demonstrated through his many years of public service, Ron’s
understanding of and commitment to New Orleans and our state
will serve Louisianians well as we face perhaps the most challenging time
in our state’s history.”
Faucheux is currently Vice President of Government Affairs for
the American Institute of Architects (AIA), where he manages federal,
state and local government activities for the 77,000-member, 150-year-old
group. Most recently, he led AIA’s presentation last month of
the Louisiana Recovery and Rebuilding Conference in New Orleans,
and edited “Starting Point,” an insightful report resulting from the
public discussion of rebuilding needs and priorities.
“The devastation caused by Katrina and Rita changed everything,”
Faucheux said today. “The situation remains dire as hundreds of
thousands of Americans struggle day-to-day with terrifying uncertainty and
unspeakable loss. All of us who love Louisiana need to answer the call to
civic duty. Never before has a state´s congressional delegation been more
important to its future. Never before have we needed to come together, on
behalf of the public good, as we do now.”
Faucheux managed former Senator John Breaux’s first successful campaign
for the U.S. House of Representatives in 1972, and was
himself elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives at age
25. Representing the now hurricane-devastated New Orleans East
community, he served in the state House for eight years and won
reelection twice. His fellow legislators at the time included Sen.
Landrieu,
Congressmen Richard Baker, R-Baton Rouge, and Bill Jefferson,
D-New Orleans, and former Congressman Billy Tauzin, R-Chackbay. Faucheux later
served as the state’s Secretary of Commerce.
As a political consultant, Faucheux handled 116 campaigns in 11 states and
came to Washington in 1993 as publisher and editor of
Campaigns & Elections magazine, a position he held for 10 years. He is
currently a Contributor-at-Large to the magazine.
Long-serving Landrieu Chief of Staff Norma Jane Sabiston, who announced
her retirement from the Senate earlier this month to join
the Marmillion + Company public relations firm, originally entered the
political campaign arena as a volunteer in Faucheux’s first race
for the state legislature.
“As a young student, I volunteered in Ron Faucheux’s campaign
and developed profound, lasting admiration for his intellect and
commitment to public service,” she said today. “He will serve Senator
Landrieu and the people of Louisiana very well, as he brings
his immense talents to bear in this most challenging of times for
our state.”
Faucheux holds a bachelor’s degree in Foreign Service from
Georgetown University, a Juris Doctor from Louisiana State University and
a
Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of New Orleans. He teaches
at George Washington University’s Graduate School of
Political Management and Georgetown University’s Public Policy Institute,
and is the author or editor of several popular books on
politics, including Running for Office, Winning Elections and The Debate
Book.
“I look forward to working with the entire Louisiana delegation
and members of Congress throughout the nation, regardless of party, to
give our state and the entire Gulf Coast region the new hope and tools of
recovery that are so desperately needed,” Faucheux said. “I
thank Sen. Landrieu for giving me this extraordinary opportunity. We have
known one another as colleagues and friends for more than 25 years.
“It is an honor to be part of her Senate team and to serve my state and
nation at this historic time."
