DJP Update 8-17-2005: Pleasant Surprise - Patient
Safety Award
See award press release below. Truly a pleasant surprise. Honored and
appreciative to get this award. The passage of this legislation,
as I mentioned before, is because many individuals and organizations
worked together and said the same message. Now we need to nurture
and monitor this legislation to get maximum results from it.
I am doing well and hope all on the mailing list are in good health and
having a great summer. Robin and I are a little tired today as
we had 3 of our grandchildren, ages 3-6, over yesterday and they stayed
overnight. Even Tabasco, our wonderful dog, was exhausted.
What energy!
Stay well.

The Doctors Company Names Donald J. Palmisano, M.D., as Recipient of
Award for the Advancement of Patient Safety
NAPA, Calif., Aug. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The Doctors Company, the
nation'sleading physician-owned medical malpractice insurance provider,
is pleased to award Donald J. Palmisano, M.D., J.D., F.A.C.S., past
president of the AMA, with The Doctors Company Award for the Advancement
of Patient Safety.
The award is designed to draw public and industry attention to
the importance of patient safety within the medical profession and to
recognize

The Doctors Company is honoring Dr. Palmisano for his tireless advocacy of
the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act of 2005, Public Law
109-41, during his tenure as the president of the American
Medical Association. This law, which was passed by Congress and signed by
President Bush on July 27, 2005, establishes a confidential reporting
structure in which physicians, hospitals, and other health care
professionals and entities can voluntarily report information on errors to
patient safety organizations for review by experts to improve the system
for all with the goal of preventing future errors. In addition to his
legislative activities, Dr. Palmisano is being recognized for his
extensive participation as a member of the Board of Directors of the
National Patient Safety Foundation.
"Dr. Palmisano's advocacy has accelerated important progress in raising
the call for improved risk management and patient safety systems in
American healthcare," said David B. Troxel, M.D., medical director for
The Doctors Company. "He continues to champion the cause for refined
patient safety practices and to shine the light on the connection between
patient safety and improvement in the medical liability crisis."
Dr. Palmisano is a New Orleans general and vascular surgeon in private
practice since 1970. He is clinical professor of surgery and clinical
professor of medical jurisprudence at Tulane as well as adjunct professor
in the Department of Health Systems Management of the Tulane School
of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. Dr. Palmisano is president of
Intrepid Resources(R), a medical risk management company, was president of
the Louisiana State Medical Society in 1984-85 and, from 1999-2003, was
a member of the board of the Joint Commission On Accreditation of
Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). He was the president of the American
Medical Association for the 2003-2004 term, is on the board of the
National Patient Safety Foundation, and serves on The Doctors Company
Board of Governors. In June of this year, he was elected to the Board of
Governors of Tulane University Health Sciences Center. Dr. Palmisano has
testified before Congress
on numerous occasions, and is a frequent speaker who is widely quoted on
medical liability reform and patient safety.
"I am honored to receive this award from The Doctors Company," said Dr.
Palmisano. "I firmly believe that effective patient safety practices
are an essential method for improving the healthcare delivery system
and tempering the medical liability crisis."
